I’ve emphasized it before, and it’s worth repeating—skincare is my passion. I’m discerning about what touches my skin, consistently discovering that the best results come from everyday grocery items rather than skincare products lining the shelves of drugstores. I’ve experimented with numerous options, and my sensitive, dry skin consistently craves natural cleansers or pantry items that restore moisture, add radiance, and avoid causing breakouts.

In 2008, frustrated with numerous cleansers causing breakouts, I turned to grocery store items for my skincare regimen. Even dermatologist-approved cleansers weren’t solving the issue, leaving my skin resembling a connect-the-dots game. Seeking a solution, I delved into a skincare journey. The more I learned about the historical use of food in early Egyptian times, the more intrigued I became by experimenting with pantry items on my skin to observe their effects.

Oats

The initial item I experimented with was oats. I soaked them in warm water and applied them by gently rubbing in a circular motion on my face. Afterward, I rinsed off with warm water and concluded the routine by splashing some cold water to close my pores. Utilizing oats as a face wash not only leaves my face feeling smooth, hydrated, and clean but, best of all, it doesn’t lead to any breakouts!

Coconut Oil

Step aside makeup remover face wipes; Coconut Oil takes the crown for makeup removal and serves as an excellent moisturizer! I typically massage coconut oil onto my makeup-covered skin, and like magic, it dissolves the makeup effortlessly. On occasions, I opt for using coconut oil alone to remove my makeup with warm water, follow up with a cold water splash to close my pores, and then apply a bit more coconut oil as my moisturizer. For skin care, organic, unrefined coconut oil reigns supreme, preserving all the naturally occurring phytonutrients and polyphenols.

Rice Water

Enter Rice Water, a fantastic solution for minimizing pores and achieving a radiant complexion. While I prefer using jasmine rice, you can choose white, brown, basmati, or any rice variety of your liking. After cooking the rice, save the leftover water and dip a cotton pad into it for a natural toner. Your skin will experience an instant tightening sensation and a brighter appearance.

Lemon

For brightening effects, turn to the power of Lemon. Dilute fresh lemon juice with water and apply it to your face using a cotton pad as a toner. Lemons are known to even out dark spots, reduce redness, and leave you with a refreshing citrus aroma!

Cucumbers

Cucumbers aren’t just a delicious snack; they’re also a fantastic addition to your skincare routine, especially if you have irritated or acne-prone skin. Blend an unpeeled cucumber until it achieves a watery consistency, then strain to remove any remaining pieces. Apply the cucumber mixture to your clean face and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. For an extra treat, consider adding oats to the blended cucumber for some additional skincare love.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes aren’t just a salad or burger ingredient; they’re a powerful fruit that can help prevent wrinkles! Cut a tomato in half and rub it all over your skin. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse. Tomatoes act as an astringent, helping to tighten your skin and lighten it at the same time.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera doesn’t just offer deep moisture to the skin; it’s also rich in anti-inflammatory properties that promote skin healing. This herb can effectively treat acne and blemishes. Apply a small amount of the gel to your face, gently massaging it in a circular motion. Rinse with cold water and pat dry for refreshed skin.

 Turmeric

Turmeric stands out as the ultimate spice for addressing skin issues. Packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric can rejuvenate your skin, providing a beautiful glow. Create a paste by mixing ½ teaspoon of turmeric with some milk. Gently apply it to your entire face, leave it on for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water and splash with cold water to close your pores.
