Taylor Swift just got engaged to Travis Kelce, and while I can say “congratulations” to them as a couple, what has deeply unsettled me is not their engagement itself but the public reaction to it.

My entire timeline has been overflowing with videos of fans crying literal tears over a complete stranger’s engagement. People making emotional montages, shaking, sobbing, and acting as though their own sister or best friend just got engaged. Even Krispy Kreme is offering FREE donuts to celebrate!

And I have to pause and ask: What has happened to our society that we cry over a relationship we truly know nothing about?

Celebrity Worship is Modern-Day Idolatry

Matthew 6:22-23 reminds us,

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness.”

The devil knows this. He works overtime through entertainment, music, and celebrity culture because he knows these are direct gateways to the mind and heart. And when we idolize celebrities, we are not only lowering our guard but also inviting those influences to shape us.

A Different Standard for Believers

Now, don’t get me wrong, I have favorite artists too. Most of them are gospel singers. And yes, I might sing loud at a concert, raise my hands, or even cry tears of worship.

But here’s the key difference: my worship is for God alone.

If I cry at a concert, it’s because the Holy Spirit moves me not because another human being is in my presence. If I scream my lungs out, it’s to praise Jesus not to elevate someone to a throne they don’t belong on.

Psalm 115:1 says,

“Not to us, Lord, not to us but to Your name be the glory.”

Taylor Swift’s engagement is her personal life. It should not hold this much weight in ours. When people cry over a stranger’s engagement but feel nothing when they hear about Jesus dying for them—that’s the real problem.

As Christians, we must guard our hearts and minds. Let’s be careful not to get swept away in the culture of celebrity worship. Let’s put our emotions, our focus, and our adoration where they truly belong.

On Christ alone.

Because no celebrity, no matter how talented, can save us. Only Jesus can.
